The broadband industry – and equipment vendors in particular – must embrace transparent communication with customers and the general public about the impact of their equipment on the environment. Specifically, the industry needs to make available complete information about the carbon footprint during any product’s lifecycle, and provide full disclosure.
Therefore, the first piece in the puzzle is transparent disclosure of the level of compliance with the Code of Conduct on Energy Consumption of Broadband Equipment issued by the European Commission’s Joint Research Centre.
The limits for electricity consumption set in the document are a basis for the implementation of CoC-compliancy labelling, which will provide transparent information to operators and facilitate responsible and well-informed decisions aimed at reducing the environmental impact.
