Austria needs to keep pace with other European countries when it comes to bringing ultrafast fibre connectivity to residents. To connect the unconnected residing in hard-to-reach and rural locations, a key project in the country began in June 2023.
Less than a year into the project between Speed Connect Austria and Slovenia’s Kontron, Speed Connect Austria has laid more than 800 km of fibre and connected 2,000 homes in wine-growing rural areas of Lower Austria, providing 10-gigabit connectivity to all service providers operating across the open FTTH network.
The Weinviertel region in the northeast of Lower Austria is a landscape characterised by vineyards and fields on gently rolling hills and unspoiled nature. Traditionally dependent on agriculture – and viticulture in particular – the wine-growing region is known for its hospitality, numerous traditional winery farms, ‘Heuriger’ taverns and countless romantic cellar streets.
With ultrafast fibre-optic connectivity, the residents can now also benefit from the new opportunities of a digital society.
