Case study

“The versatility of the Kontron 5G Mobile Private Network is perfectly tailored for industries like our Augsburg plant with advanced needs for smoothly distributed, inherently stable network coverage, cable-like bandwidth, enhanced privacy, and security. It also offers future support for deterministic transport of mission-critical control data on a converged wireless infrastructure. We will gradually replace our wired infrastructure with wireless 5G to support a much more flexible production scheme with easy-to-reconfigure production islands and optimised processes, like automated, AI–based quality control, improved operational communications, enhanced security and overall paperless processes in manufacturing and warehouse,” said Walter Gruber, Director of Production & Logistics Site Manager Augsburg at Kontron Europe.

Frequently Asked Questions

A mobile private network (MPN) is a type of virtual private network (VPN) designed specifically for mobile devices such as smartphones and tablets. It provides a secure and private connection for mobile users, allowing them to access the Internet or corporate network while keeping their data protected.

MPN provides a secure and private connection for mobile devices and protects the user’s data from potential threats such as hacking, eavesdropping or unauthorized access. Furthermore, MPN offers additional benefits such as bypassing restrictions and enabling secure remote access, making it a valuable tool for individuals and businesses.

There are several reasons why you need a Mobile Private Network (MPN):

  1. One of the main reasons for using an MPN is to ensure the security of your mobile device’s Internet connection.
  2. Using an MPN allows you to maintain your privacy and anonymity while accessing the Internet.
  3. By connecting to an MPN server in another region, you can bypass restrictions (some online content, services, or websites may be restricted in certain regions) and access content or services that would otherwise be unavailable to you.
  4. An MPN can provide secure remote access to your organization’s network. This allows you to access your company’s internal resources securely and privately, such as files, servers, or databases, regardless of your physical location.
  5. Advertisers, marketers, or other companies can track the location or behavior of your mobile device to collect data for targeted advertising or other purposes. Using an MPN can protect you from such tracking and maintain your privacy.

5G offers high speeds, ultra-low latency and unprecedented reliability, and ease of coverage compared to Wi-Fi. 5G-based solutions enable more efficient and powerful digitalisation of operations and processes than ever before.

LTE provides speeds, security and coverage needed in enterprise environments for critical communications and advanced IIoT applications. Big advantage is that it can be used with Tier 1 vendor radio solutions or existing mobile operator radios.

Time-Sensitive Networking (TSN) is a set of standards currently being developed within the IEEE 802.1 framework, which governs Ethernet-based communication. TSN primarily focuses on the data link layer (Layer 2) of communication, making it a foundational technology rather than a complete communication protocol. This modularity allows TSN to be integrated with higher-level applications, particularly in conjunction with wireless technologies like 5G, which offer high throughput, low latency, and robust Quality of Service (QoS) enforcement.

TSN enhances traditional Ethernet by adding advanced features such as quality of service, time synchronization, low latency, and seamless redundancy. Applications can register their communication needs with the network, which then guarantees the requested QoS. These connections operate within dedicated streams, protected by resource allocation within network switches. Each stream can be configured to support real-time traffic. This approach contrasts with current Ethernet-based real-time protocols like PROFINET, which restrict the network to a single real-time protocol alongside standard TCP/IP traffic. 5G is natively supporting Ethernet PDU sessions which make it ideal as wireless transport technology for delivering deterministic communication for the industrial type of protocols.
